While ringing up a customer, I believe it's polite to ask how they are and whether or not they found what they were looking for. This is how one conversation went:
Me: Hi. How are you?
Customer: [Shakes head]
Me: Did you find everything okay?
Customer: No.
Me: I'm sorry; what did you have trouble finding?
Customer: No!
Me: Um... What were you looking for?
Customer: NO!
